Exxon Expands Proxxima Operations in Baytown,
Eyes Billion-Dollar Market
ExxonMobil is consolidating and expanding its Proxxima technology at its massive Baytown Complex, strengthening its position in advanced materials development.
The company has been relocating its Proxxima operations from Pasadena, California, following its 2021 acquisition of Materia Inc., a California-based firm that collaborated with Exxon in developing Proxxima polyolefin thermoset resin systems. Over the past year, Exxon has integrated these operations into its Baytown facility, which is among the world's largest and most technologically advanced petroleum and petrochemical complexes. The Baytown site includes a refinery, a chemical plant, an olefins plant, and the Baytown Technology and Engineering Complex, now home to the Proxxima lab.
Currently, the lab employs 42 people, with plans to grow to about 60 employees by the end of the year. Company officials highlight the move as a step toward providing greater career opportunities while advancing Exxonâs material science innovations.
Proxxima, a high-performance resin technology, is designed to be both lighter and stronger than steel, with potential applications in industries such as automotive, construction, and renewable energy. It can replace steel rebar, reinforce battery boxes in electric vehicles, coat pipelines, and improve wind turbine materials. Exxon aims to scale up Proxxima production to 200,000 tons per year by 2030, targeting a market that could reach 5 million tons and $30 billion by the end of the decade.
This expansion is part of Exxonâs broader investment in advanced materials. Alongside Proxxima, the company is exploring carbon materials technology, which could enhance electric vehicle battery performance by improving range and charging efficiency by 30%. The combined market for Proxxima and carbon materials is projected to exceed $100 billion by 2030.
Looking further ahead, Exxon sees significant financial potential in these ventures. By 2040, its Proxxima and carbon materials businesses could generate over $6 billion in annual earnings with investment returns exceeding 20%âoutperforming its energy products segmentâs recent averages. Additionally, Exxonâs portfolio of low-carbon technologies, including carbon capture, hydrogen, and lithium, is projected to contribute $3 billion in earnings by 2030.
Train Collision in Baytown Sparks
Lawsuit Against Union Pacific
A former railroad conductor has filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific Railroad Company, alleging that the companyâs negligence led to a train collision that left him with severe injuries. The lawsuit, filed on February 7, 2025, in the District Court of Harris County, Texas, seeks damages exceeding $1 million.
The incident in question occurred on December 6, 2024, in Baytown, Texas. While on duty near Thompson Road and N. Battlebell Road, conductor Michael Burks was operating a train when it collided with stationary railcars that had been left idling on the track. According to the complaint, Burks had repeatedly communicated his location and track conditions over radio channels, yet he was never warned about the presence of the stationary railcars.
Burks argues that Union Pacific failed to uphold its responsibility under the Federal Employersâ Liability Act (FELA) by not ensuring a safe work environment. The lawsuit cites multiple alleged failures, including a lack of adequate warnings, proper assistance, and necessary training. Adding to his grievances, Burks claims that Union Pacific terminated his employment after the accident, despite his six-year service record with no prior disciplinary issues.
As a result of the collision, Burks suffered significant injuries to his back and shoulder, along with mental trauma. His lawsuit seeks compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, diminished earning capacity, physical and emotional suffering, and other damages. He is also requesting post-judgment interest and court costs as part of the legal action against Union Pacific.

Fridayâs Quiz -What unusual defense mechanism helps the hoatzin, also known as the "stinkbird," avoid predators?
Answer: B) It emits a foul odor due to its unique digestive system.
The hoatzin, a tropical bird from South America, has a fermentation-based digestive system, similar to cows, that helps it break down tough plant matter. This process produces a strong manure-like odor, making the bird unappetizing to predatorsâearning it the nickname "stinkbird"!
