Baytown Saves Time and Money
With High-Tech Cement Truck

The City of Baytown has found a faster, smarter way to fix roads and sidewalks—by making its own concrete. Instead of waiting weeks for deliveries, the city’s public works department now mixes concrete on-site using a new high-tech cement truck. This change has sped up repairs, saved money, and made streets safer for residents.

Why Baytown Needed a Change

Baytown’s growing population means more wear and tear on roads, sidewalks, and curbs. But getting small batches of concrete for repairs wasn’t easy. Local suppliers focused on big construction projects, leaving Baytown waiting up to a month for short-load deliveries. Delays like these not only slowed down repairs but also increased costs.

City officials knew they needed a better solution. That’s when they decided to invest in a Cemen Tech volumetric concrete mixer—a special truck that mixes fresh concrete on-site, exactly when and where it’s needed.

How the New Concrete Truck Helps

With the new mixer, Baytown can now pour concrete as early as 7:30 a.m., complete a job, and move on to another site the same day. This means fewer open construction zones and quicker fixes for cracked sidewalks and potholes.

The machine is also easy to use allowing operators to adjust the mixture at the push of a button. This flexibility helps workers handle different types of repairs—from curbs to sidewalks—without wasting materials.

“It’s a huge improvement for productivity,” said Kevin Harvill, Baytown’s Assistant Director of Public Works. “We’re in control of our own concrete now.”

Safer Streets and Big Savings

Fixing roads and sidewalks faster doesn’t just make life more convenient—it also makes Baytown safer. Cracked sidewalks are a leading cause of trip-and-fall injuries, which can result in costly lawsuits for cities. With fewer delays, Baytown is reducing risks and keeping residents safe.

The investment has also paid off quickly. Within 18 months, the city recovered the full cost of the truck and its concrete storage silo. Without the extra fees and delays from suppliers, the city has saved even more money—funds that can now be used for other important projects.

Inspiring Other Cities

Baytown’s success has caught the attention of nearby cities, including La Porte, which has now purchased its own volumetric concrete mixer. City officials believe this approach could benefit many other communities looking to improve infrastructure while staying within budget.

By taking control of its concrete production, Baytown has made a smart investment that benefits both the city’s workers and its residents. Faster repairs, lower costs, and safer streets make this a win-win for the whole community..

Texas Ranked #1 for New Residents
in 2023, Surpassing Florida

Texas was the top state for new residents in 2023, with a net gain of over 137,000 people, according to a new migration study by StorageCafe. The Lone Star State outpaced Florida for the first time in a decade and has added more than 1 million new residents since 2014.

Why Are People Moving to Texas?

One of the biggest reasons people are flocking to Texas is affordability—especially when it comes to housing. Home prices in eight of the top 10 states sending new residents to Texas are between 8% and 59% higher, making homeownership much more attainable. Nearly 40% of newcomers buy a home within a year of moving.

The study found that California was the largest source of new Texas residents, with over 97,000 people making the switch in 2023. Those who relocate from California could save an average of 59% on housing and living costs.

Millennials Lead the Way

Young professionals are a major part of this migration trend. More than 46,200 millennials moved to Texas in 2023, making the state a top destination for talent. Experts say that people are looking for places with lower costs, better job opportunities, and more housing options, and Texas checks all the boxes.

A Growing Trend

With strong job markets, new housing developments, and a lower cost of living compared to other states, Texas is expected to continue attracting new residents. Whether people are moving for work, affordability, or a fresh start, Texas has become the go-to state for those seeking better opportunities.

Tuesday’s Quiz -What surprising feature allows pistol shrimp to stun prey with incredible force?
Answer: C) They snap their claw so fast it creates a bubble that produces heat nearly as hot as the sun.

The pistol shrimp, also known as the snapping shrimp, can snap its specialized claw so rapidly that it creates a high-speed bubble. When this bubble collapses, it generates a shockwave strong enough to stun prey and briefly produces temperatures near 8,000°F (4,427°C)—close to the surface temperature of the sun!
