Urban Search & Rescue Excellence:
BFD Station 5 Firefighters Reach the Top
Last month, firefighters from Station 5 participated in the ACS-5 Advanced Breaching and Breaking course, refining their skills in advanced breaching techniques for concrete, wood, and metal while operating from rope.
For five of our members, this course marked the final step in earning their TEEX Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Specialist certification—the highest level of training in structural collapse rescue operations. This elite program requires over 300 hours of specialized coursework and prepares responders for the most complex rescue scenarios. Their expertise in USAR strengthens our team and enhances our department’s ability to respond to these situations.
This training was made possible through funding from a Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant, and we are incredibly proud of our newest Urban Search and Rescue Specialists:

Lee High School Life Skills Dance:
Celebrating Movement for All
For the past five years, the Life Skills Dance class at Lee High School, led by teacher Alice Henrichsen, has allowed students with special needs to enjoy and benefit from dance. Henrichsen, a kinesiology graduate with experience in adaptive physical education at the Texas School for the Blind, envisioned the class and brought it to life in 2020 after years of planning.
The Life Skills Dance class meets daily during the third period, providing students with a structured and engaging environment where they can express themselves through movement. With over 20 students currently enrolled, the class continues to grow as students eagerly anticipate each session. Students can also sign up for the class through their ARD (Admission, Review, and Dismissal) meetings.
Recently, a select group of students had the opportunity to perform for the 12 Days of Christmas celebration at the district's Administration Building, displaying their hard work and enthusiasm. Additionally, the class has participated in two on-campus performances, demonstrating the program’s positive impact and the students' dedication.
Sophomore Angel Canales, who has been in the class for two years, enjoys the physical exercise aspect of dance. He was introduced to the class through his sister, who served as an aide last year. Fellow sophomore Cherish Hudson shares the same enthusiasm, expressing her love for dance and appreciation for her classmates' support.
Henrichsen is passionate about ensuring that students with special needs have access to the same opportunities as their peers. "Every kid deserves a chance to dance and have fun," Henrichsen says. "Every student is different, but dance allows everyone to be successful in their own way." With its continued success, the Life Skills Dance class at Lee High School promotes a love for movement and builds students' confidence, friendships, and a sense of accomplishment. As the class expands, it serves as a model for inclusion and adaptive physical education in schools.

Monday’s Quiz - What is a bizarre but true fact about beavers' teeth?
Answer: A) Their teeth never stop growing and are self-sharpening.
Beavers' teeth grow continuously throughout their lives, which is why they must constantly gnaw on wood to keep them from becoming too long. Their enamel is fortified with iron, giving their teeth an orange hue and making them incredibly strong and self-sharpening—perfect for cutting through trees!
