Lyte Fiber Brings High-Speed Internet to Baytown with $15M Investment

Lyte Fiber celebrated a major milestone on January 29 as it officially connected its first homes in Baytown to its high-speed fiber internet network. Marking the occasion, local officials, community leaders, and residents gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Baytown Chamber of Commerce to welcome a new era of faster, more reliable internet access.

Baytown is Lyte’s first market, with the company investing over $15 million to build a network designed to meet the region’s growing digital needs. Unlike traditional networks, Lyte’s infrastructure is nearly 100% underground with backup power at every active cabinet, making it one of the most weather-resistant fiber networks in Texas.

The initial phase of the project aims to provide service to 15,000 homes and businesses, with further expansion plans already in motion. Local leaders, including Mayor Charles Johnson and City Council Member Kendrick Griffith, praised the investment as a game-changer for residents and businesses, enhancing economic growth and innovation in Baytown.

In addition to its internet services, Lyte has pledged to give back 1% of its annual revenue to local Baytown charities, reinforcing its long-term commitment to the community.

This milestone highlights Baytown’s progress in becoming a more connected and tech-driven city, setting the stage for future development.

Breakout Buddies

Breakout Buddies - A Volunteer / Short-Term Foster Opportunity – For At Risk & Long Stay Shelter Dogs

A program dedicated to giving shelter dogs in urgent need the support and exposure they deserve. Designed specifically for dogs in our care who are most vulnerable and in need of hope, our initiative focuses on providing these incredible dogs with regular “breakouts” from the shelter—an opportunity for enrichment, exercise, additional marketing / exposure, and connection while they await their forever homes, fosters, or rescues.

We understand that some dogs require a little extra encouragement and opportunities to shine. The goal of Breakout Buddies is to ensure that every dog in our care who is at risk or is a long stay will receive a “breakout” every single day from Tuesday through Saturday. With your help, this goal can be achieved!

We believe compassionate members in our community will share this vision and possess the desire to rally behind these deserving dogs—those who desperately need a renewed sense of hope for a brighter future beyond the shelter walls.

Please join us in this heartfelt endeavor to give every shelter dog a chance at happiness and a loving home. Your support and passion can change their story forever and this is not possible without you.

Thank You Officer Watkins, Baytown Police Department

During the month of December, the Baker Rd/Decker Dr corridor became a primary target for burglaries and stolen vehicles. During the reported burglaries, information gathered led officers to formulate a plan utilizing various patrol tactics in an attempt to apprehend the suspect in the commission of a crime. Officer Watkins and another Officer put together a great plan and were able to apprehend the burglary suspects and 9 total charges were made. Great work from our officers!

Thursday’s Quiz - What incredible survival trait allows wood frogs to endure harsh Arctic winters?
Answer: C) They produce a natural antifreeze and freeze solid without dying.

Wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) survive freezing Arctic temperatures by producing glucose and urea that act as antifreeze, preventing ice crystals from damaging their cells. During winter, they can freeze solid—stopping their heart and breathing—only to thaw out and hop away in spring!
