Baytown Secures $50M
CHIPS Investment, Creating 300 Jobs

Baytown will see a significant economic boost as Sumika Semiconductor Materials Texas Inc. receives $52.1 million in CHIPS and Science Act funding to build a high-purity chemical production facility. This project, Sumika's first major U.S. investment, will create nearly 300 jobs and strengthen the local semiconductor supply chain.

The new factory will produce ultra-high purity isopropyl alcohol, essential for manufacturing advanced logic and memory chips. This development not only enhances Baytown’s industrial significance but also bolsters America’s efforts to reclaim global leadership in semiconductor production.

Central to this initiative is workforce readiness. Sumika has partnered with Lee College and San Jacinto College to prepare residents for high-purity chemical processing roles. These institutions will provide training and development through their workforce and community development programs, ensuring Baytown has a skilled labor pool to meet the project’s needs.

U.S. Senator John Cornyn, who authored the CHIPS for America Act, emphasized the broader impact of the funding. “By investing in semiconductor manufacturing and supporting industries, we’re creating jobs, securing supply chains, and boosting national security,” Cornyn said.

This project represents a transformative opportunity for Baytown, combining job creation, education partnerships, and advanced technology to drive the city’s economic growth and global competitiveness.

Governor Abbott Announces Film Friendly Texas Designation For Baytown

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that Baytown, having completed the multi-step training and certification process, has been designated as a Film Friendly Texas Certified Community by the Texas Film Commission.

Congratulations to Baytown on earning the Film Friendly Texas designation and joining more than 175 other Texas communities that have received this recognition,” said Governor Abbott. “Through the Film Friendly Texas training and certification process, Texas communities are prepared to help match local businesses with production-related needs, creating jobs for Texas-based crew members and local residents, as well as spurring on-site spending at local businesses. I thank the Texas Film Commission for helping communities like Baytown market their unique appeal and support local job creation through media production. Texas is brimming with promise, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside all of our communities to ensure they have the knowledge and tools needed to succeed.”

“It’s a privilege for Baytown to be recognized by Governor Abbott as a Film Friendly Texas Community,” said City Manager Jason Reynolds. “Movies featuring John Wayne, Robocop, and others have been filmed in Baytown, and we can’t wait to show new filmmakers why our community is the perfect backdrop for their next project.”

Baytown joins more than 175 Film Friendly Texas Certified Communities from across the state that receive ongoing training and guidance from the Texas Film Commission on media industry standards, best practices, and how to effectively accommodate on-location filming activity in their community.

For more than 50 years, the Texas Film Commission has helped grow local jobs and economies by promoting Texas as the premier destination for film, television, commercial, animation, visual effects, video game, and extended reality production. The Texas Film Commission in the Governor's Economic Development & Tourism Office has attracted more than $2.5 billion in local spending and created more than 189,000 production jobs across the state from 2007 to 2024.
