Be Well™ Baytown Brings
Health Resources to Local Residents

ExxonMobil and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center are transforming community health in Baytown, Texas, through the Be Well™ Baytown initiative. Launched in 2016, this collaborative program aims to reduce the risk of cancer and chronic diseases by promoting healthier lifestyle choices.

Supported by a $10 million grant from ExxonMobil, the 10-year initiative focuses on five key areas: healthy eating, active living, sun safety, tobacco-free living, and preventive care. By mobilizing local organizations, Be Well™ Baytown delivers education and resources directly to residents to foster long-term health improvements.

Collaboration Fuels Success

Be Well™ Baytown’s impact stems from the partnerships it has built across the community. Key collaborators include the City of Baytown, Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District, Lee College, Hearts and Hands of Baytown, and United Way of Greater Baytown and Chambers County. Together, these organizations are driving change through educational workshops, health screenings, and accessible resources.

“Be Well™ Baytown has improved health and well-being for residents in our community,” said Glenn Hayes, ExxonMobil Baytown Refinery Manager. “Each year we see progress. We’re excited about the benefits in Baytown and hope this program inspires expansion to more communities.”

A Legacy of Lasting Change

The initiative has already made a measurable difference in Baytown, empowering residents to make healthier lifestyle choices. Whether it’s encouraging students to adopt active habits, supporting smoke-free living, or providing tools for cancer prevention, Be Well™Baytown is creating a ripple effect of positive change.

ExxonMobil plans to expand similar programs to other Texas communities, using the Baytown model as a blueprint for improving health outcomes statewide.

As Be Well™ Baytown continues its mission, it underscores the power of collaboration in addressing complex health challenges and setting a new standard for community well-being. For more information visit: MDAnderson.org/BeWellCommunities

Lawsuit Filed Against Saltgrass Steak House
After Baytown Slip-and-Fall Incident

A Beaumont resident has filed a lawsuit against Saltgrass, Inc., alleging negligence following a slip-and-fall incident at the Baytown location of Saltgrass Steak House on May 13, 2023.

According to the complaint, Susan Truss slipped on an unknown liquid while walking to the restroom, resulting in injuries to her left side that required medical attention. Truss claims no caution signs were present, and despite an employee witnessing the incident, no incident report was completed. Instead, she was handed a business card by a manager.

Truss argues that Saltgrass, Inc. breached its duty of care by failing to maintain safe conditions or warn patrons of hazards. She is seeking damages ranging from $250,000 to $1 million to cover medical expenses, ongoing pain, and suffering caused by the incident.

The lawsuit, filed December 26, 2024, in Harris County District Court, underscores the importance of businesses ensuring safe environments for their patrons.

Noah Travis, Firefighter Virginia Williamson, and Firefighter Kyler Pitman—have been deployed to the Los Angeles area to assist with wildfire response efforts. This deployment is part of the Texas Intrastate Fire Mutual Aid System (TIFMAS) in coordination with CAL FIRE and the California Office of Emergency Services.

The Strike Team includes personnel from several Texas departments, including Baytown, Houston, Conroe, and Montgomery County. The team is expected to assist for 14 days, with the potential for an extension up to 21 days if needed.

The Baytown community wishes these brave firefighters a safe and successful mission as they support wildfire suppression efforts in California.
