Woman Sues City Over Alleged
Racial Profiling and Police Misconduct
Antanika Hall, a Black woman, has filed a lawsuit against the City of Baytown and Officer Yesica Garza, alleging racial discrimination and excessive force during an incident at a Walgreens in Baytown on November 25, 2023.
Hall, who was shopping for headache medicine, claims Officer Garza wrongfully accused her of shoplifting, shouting racially charged remarks in public. According to the lawsuit, Garza forcibly removed Hall's purse without consent, causing injuries to Hall’s neck and shoulder.
The suit alleges that a Walgreens employee informed Garza that Hall was not the suspected shoplifter. Garza then reportedly turned her attention to a Caucasian woman, who was treated with less aggression while in custody for shoplifting.
Hall claims the incident exacerbated her Bipolar condition, triggering a manic episode. The lawsuit accuses the city of civil rights violations, including unlawful seizure and excessive use of force, and alleges systemic issues in hiring and oversight of Baytown police officers.
The case, filed on December 20 in Harris County District Court, seeks accountability for what Hall describes as a humiliating and unnecessary display of force.
Hall is represented by Lauren Horne of DeSouza Injury Lawyers in San Antonio.
