Lamar Elementary to Close,
Building Repurposed for
Daycare and Alternative School

Goose Creek Consolidated Independent School District’s Board of Trustees has voted to close Lamar Elementary School due to declining student enrollment. The decision, made on Monday, follows a 14% drop in enrollment over the past four years. The district plans to repurpose the building to meet other needs, splitting it between a daycare and an alternative school program.

The closure has drawn criticism from some parents who feel the process moved too quickly. Aleyda Suarez, a parent of Lamar students, expressed disappointment, emphasizing the school’s role as a cornerstone of the community. She noted the strong support families receive from the school staff and fellow parents.

The district explained that lower enrollment on the south side creates an opportunity to consolidate facilities and make better use of resources. The decision was recommended by the GC2035 committee, which consists of 117 community members and held five meetings before the vote.

Starting in the 2024-2025 school year, students who previously attended Lamar will be zoned to Ashbel Smith Elementary or Carver Elementary. The full consolidation and repurposing of Lamar Elementary will take effect in the 2025-2026 school year.

Chemical Spill Update:
Baytown Spill Response: No Public Safety Threat, Water Remains Safe

Baytown Fire Department HazMat crews remain on-site at Bluebonnet Petrochemical Solutions to oversee cleanup efforts following a recent chemical spill which followed a fire. [Read article about fire] These precautionary measures ensure that the cleanup proceeds safely. Baytown’s public water supply remains unaffected, as the city receives its drinking water from the Baytown Area Water Authority, which officials confirm is safe for consumption.

While public water services are secure, four residential properties near the spill rely on private water wells. These wells have been tested, though results are still pending. Agencies assisting in the response include Harris County Precinct 2, Harris County Pollution Control, Harris County Flood Control District, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). Officials emphasize that there is currently no threat to public safety.

Bay Oaks Harbor Residents Benefit
from Major Infrastructure Overhaul

The Bay Oaks Harbor neighborhood has undergone a major transformation, thanks to the completion of significant infrastructure upgrades. Gravel roads have been replaced with smooth pavement, improving both accessibility and road safety for residents. Additionally, the stormwater drainage system has been upgraded to better manage runoff and reduce the risk of flooding.

The project also included the installation of new water and sanitary sewer utilities, providing greater reliability for these essential services. Construction crews are now finalizing details to ensure all work meets top standards.

Two additional streets are slated for improvements in a future project phase, and updates will continue to be shared with the community as progress continues. The Bay Oaks Harbor community’s patience and support have been instrumental in achieving these upgrades and building a better Baytown.
