Judges Question Family’s Lawsuit in
Controversial Baytown Police Shooting Case

A Fifth Circuit panel expressed doubt about a civil suit brought by Pamela Turner’s family after she was fatally shot by Baytown officer Juan De La Cruz in 2019. The family argues De La Cruz knew of Turner’s mental illness and shot her when she no longer posed a threat. De La Cruz claims Turner used his Taser on him during the altercation. A federal judge previously dismissed the case, ruling the officer’s actions were justified. The panel’s decision may influence how deadly force is applied in situations where suspects seize non-lethal weapons. Click to read full article
