Train Derailment in Baytown

A train derailment occurred on Friday night at the intersection of Thompson Road and Battlebell Road after one Union Pacific train rear-ended another. Approximately 12 rail cars derailed in the collision, and while two workers aboard were evaluated, they were released at the scene with no serious injuries.

Of the derailed cars, three contained plastic pellets that spilled during the incident. Some of the cars also carried liquid propane gas, while others were empty. Additionally, two rail cars landed in the canal connecting the Trinity River to the San Jacinto River.

As a precautionary measure, the City of Houston temporarily shut down water supply pumps to ensure public safety. Investigations conducted by Union Pacific Railroad Hazmat, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s Office (HCFMO) Hazmat, and the Baytown Fire Department confirmed there were no leaks from the containers, posing no immediate threat to the community.

Union Pacific Hazmat crews are actively managing cleanup operations, with HCFMO Hazmat remaining on-site to assist. Officials will continue monitoring the situation to ensure safety throughout the process.

Goose Creek CISD Plan to
Repurpose Lamar Elementary

Parents in Baytown are voicing strong opposition to a Goose Creek CISD proposal that could see Lamar Elementary School repurposed due to declining enrollment. The school, which has served generations of families, sits at less than 60% capacity.

According to the district's proposal, students would be transferred to nearby schools, such as George Washington Carver Elementary and Ashbel Smith Elementary, both of which are within a mile of Lamar and also experiencing low enrollment. District officials have assured that all current staff at Lamar will retain their jobs within Goose Creek CISD.

Proposed New Use for Lamar Elementary

If the board approves the plan, Lamar Elementary would be converted into a facility offering:
Daycare services
Alternative learning programs for students balancing work, health, or other life obligations

Community Reaction

Parents have expressed concern over losing a neighborhood school with deep community ties. Many are rallying to fight the proposed changes, worried about the impact on their children and the neighborhood. The final decision will be made by the Goose Creek CISD School Board before the end of the year.
