The Decline of Pianos in the Home🎹
Did you grow up in a home with a piano? Did you take piano lessons as a child? Once the centerpiece of family entertainment, the household piano is now increasingly listed for free on sites like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist. [Editor’s note: In checking Facebook Marketplace today, within a 45 minute drive or less from the greater Baytown area, there were 24 pianos listed. Out of the 24, ten were free and most of the others were less than $100. !!] However, these pianos, often weighing up to 1,000 pounds, come with a big caveat: buyers need to transport them themselves. For people like Judy Patrick, inheriting a family piano brings both fond memories and logistical challenges, especially when finding someone willing to take it off her hands proves difficult.
Paul Jennings, a piano dealer, notes that while pianos were once central to family gatherings, they’ve now largely been replaced by modern entertainment. Many of the pianos given away online are too old to serve a beginner, as their aging internal components make them challenging to play.
Piano tuner Jonathan Cohen, known for his expertise at venues like the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, highlights the importance of maintenance, emphasizing that a neglected piano can diminish a beginner’s experience. "The piano is meant to inspire," Cohen says, stressing that a poorly maintained instrument can do the opposite.
Despite the shifting role of pianos in American homes, some experts like Cohen remain dedicated to their upkeep, seeing long-term job security in this age-old craft. For now, however, many cherished family pianos, like Patrick’s, sit in limbo, waiting for a new chapter—or a willing buyer.
