San Jacinto Marketplace Lands EōS Fitness
as Redevelopment Gains Momentum
EōS Fitness, a rapidly growing national gym brand, has signed a lease for 40,000 square feet of space at San Jacinto Marketplace in Baytown, marking another major step in the transformation of the former San Jacinto Mall site.
The new gym will be part of the large-scale mixed-use redevelopment by Fidelis Realty Partners, which continues to attract big-name tenants to the growing retail destination along Garth Road. The Baytown location will add to EōS Fitness’s expanding presence in Texas and is expected to open in 2027.
This announcement comes as the San Jacinto Marketplace continues to evolve into a regional hub for shopping, fitness, dining, and entertainment, breathing new life into a key area of the city.
The Baytown location is already listed on the company’s website

Non-Compliant Liberty Jail Fire
Sparks Renewed Scrutiny
A fire earlier this week at the Liberty County Jail that sent five correctional officers to the hospital is now raising serious concerns about longstanding safety issues at the facility — including a failed fire inspection that had been documented months prior.
The fire, which broke out Monday night, was originally thought to be the result of an inmate fight. However, a fire marshal’s investigation later revealed that the blaze was accidentally caused by a lighting issue, which ignited a stack of papers. Inmates had reportedly begun yelling when they saw smoke, which was mistaken for fighting, according to Captain David Meyers with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office.
Five officers were treated for smoke inhalation and later released. No inmates reported injuries.
Now, new information from the Texas Commission on Jail Standards (TCJS) shows the jail had been flagged for non-compliance, with multiple violations dating back to 2023, including:
Inoperable lighting fixtures
Cluttered conditions
Overcrowding
And notably, a failed fire inspection
The jail is currently listed as one of just nine non-compliant jails in Texas.
At a February meeting of the TCJS, officials even discussed the possibility of the Texas Attorney General’s Office filing an injunction that could shut down the jail entirely. When asked about the status of that potential legal action, Captain Meyers referred inquiries to the county judge and sheriff, who have not yet responded.
While the fire was brought under control and no lives were lost, advocates and observers say the situation could have been far worse — and may still warrant urgent intervention.
For more information on the fire, see our newsletter article from yesterday.
