Fire at Liberty County Jail Linked to
Electrical Issue, Not Inmate Disturbance

A fire that broke out Monday night at the Liberty County Jail was initially believed to be the result of a fight among inmates—but investigators have since determined the true cause: a malfunctioning light fixture.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the fire began in the roof area above an office on the west end of the facility, located at 2400 Beaumont Avenue in Liberty. Though early reports suggested that a large inmate altercation may have sparked the blaze, officials later clarified that the smoke and confusion were caused by a light fixture ballast catching fire—not inmate activity.

“Inmates were yelling because they saw smoke beginning to fill the hallway, not because of a fight,” the sheriff’s office confirmed in a follow-up statement.

Roughly 45 to 60 inmates were safely evacuated during the incident, and no inmates were injured. However, five correctional officers were treated for smoke inhalation and later released.

The Liberty County Fire Department responded quickly, working to extinguish the fire, ventilate the building, and clear the remaining smoke using large fans. By 10 p.m., the fire was under control, and officials confirmed the facility was safe for inmates to return to their housing areas.
