14-Year-Old Girl Fatally Shot
by Classmate at Baytown Playground
A Baytown community is grieving after 14-year-old Anaya Zachary was fatally shot at a playground near her home Friday afternoon. The tragic incident took place around 4 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Village Lane, following an earlier altercation between Anaya and a fellow student.
According to Baytown police, the suspected shooter is a 13-year-old boy who attended Baytown Junior School alongside Anaya in the Goose Creek CISD. Authorities say the two were involved in an earlier dispute—possibly on the school bus—that escalated later in the day.
The suspect allegedly returned to the apartment complex wearing all black and a mask, called out to Anaya at the playground, and then opened fire. She was shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
The teenage suspect is currently in police custody, but his name has not been released due to his age. It remains unclear what charges he may face, or whether his parents could also be held legally responsible. The Baytown Police Department is continuing its investigation and has not released further details at this time.
In response to the tragedy, Goose Creek CISD confirmed that a student had died after being shot and announced that social-emotional support services would be available for students and staff when classes resume.
The community is left mourning the loss of a young life, and many are calling for reflection, accountability, and healing in the days ahead.

IMPORTANT ROAD CLOSURES:
Microsurfacing Program
Starting March 24, crews will begin microsurfacing roadways across the city. This cost-effective maintenance seals and rejuvenates existing asphalt, extending the pavement’s life.
Roadways impacted on Day 1 include: Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, Houston, Ward, Cedar Bayou, Aron, Alexander, North Alexander, North 4th, and Peggy
During active work, streets will be closed to vehicle access. All parked vehicles must be moved and sprinklers turned off 24 hours before and after treatment. Residents will receive door hangers from Public Works & Engineering one week before work begins, and from the contractor 24 hours before paving.
Weather permitting, work will occur between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. There are eight zones and work in each zone is expected to take one day.
