Covestro Slashes Emissions at Baytown Facility with New Sustainability Initiative
Covestro, a leading manufacturer of high-quality polymers, has made significant progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions at its Baytown, Texas, facility. The company recently launched its Nitric Acid Unit Climate Initiative (NAUCI), a project aimed at curbing emissions from its nitric acid production process. This initiative has resulted in a 99% reduction in emissions from the unit, which translates to an overall 60% decrease in the plant's Scope 1 emissions.
Nitric acid plays a key role in producing methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and toluene diisocyanate (TDI), essential components of polyurethane used in various products, including mattresses, furniture, insulation, and automotive seating. However, its production has traditionally been a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. With the introduction of NAUCI, Covestro has cut approximately 195,000 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent annually. When combined with previous emission reduction projects at the facility, the company has achieved a cumulative annual reduction of nearly 900,000 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent.
The Baytown facility is on track to meet its goal of achieving Scope 1 and Scope 2 climate neutrality by 2035. Covestro's leadership has emphasized the project's long-term environmental impact, both within the facility and in the surrounding Baytown community, as the company continues to push forward with its sustainability strategy.

Monday’s Quiz -What unique feature helps alligators survive cold temperatures in frozen water?
Answer: A) They stick their snouts above the ice and enter a state of brumation.
Alligators survive cold snaps through a process called brumation, a reptilian version of hibernation. When water begins to freeze, they stick their snouts above the ice, allowing them to breathe while their bodies slow down to conserve energy. This eerie sight is known as "snorkeling."!
